Bill Gates
William Henry Gates III, better known as Bill Gates, is a well-known American computer scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He rose to fame when he created Microsoft together with Paul Allen. According to Forbes magazine, his fortune amounts to $96.6 billion, and he is one of the richest people in the world.
Born on October 28, 1955, in 1976 he decided to drop out of college and
move to Albuquerque, where MITS was headquartered. He wanted to reach an
agreement with this company to give him 50% of the Basic computer language.
Popularizing the use of the personal computer
The origin of the personal computer dates back to 1975. Bill Gates and Paul
Allen negotiated the acquisition of the Basic language interpreter for the
Altair 8800, one of the most popular computers of the time. Unlike the strategy
followed by Apple, Microsoft did lend its operating system to hardware
companies. This meant that it was introduced in practically all the devices
that were being developed and it managed to be distributed on a large scale all
over the world.
If Bill Gates is well known for anything, it is for having created the
Windows operating system together with Paul Allen. Both took their first steps
in 1985, when the first version of Windows was published, although it was not
very successful. It was in December 1987 when version 2.0 was released, which
had a very positive impact on society. In May 1990 the first popularized
version, 3.0, was released.
Incredible as it may seem, Bill Gates played a very important role in
saving Apple. Although his relationship with Steve Jobs was not very good, the
Mac received a number of applications that Microsoft had produced and that
saved Apple programmers time and effort.
In 1997, Bill Gates invested $150 million in non-voting Apple shares when Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy and only had enough money to cover expenses for three more months. The stake ended in 2003, when Microsoft sold its shares for $350 million. Today they would be worth $10,350 billion.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill Gates is very proud of the
foundation he chairs with his wife. It is the largest private charitable
foundation globally, according to Forbes magazine they are the most generous
donors in the world after giving away $38 billion. One of the main
contributions was made in 2006, when they donated 500 million dollars for the
fight against AIDS in 132 countries.
One of the main causes launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
is the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). This is an initiative
aimed at improving land and seeds for farmers in Africa, to which they have
committed $264.5 million to date.
And finally, in 2015, the American tycoon announced on his personal blog
that the foundation he chairs with his wife would fund a machine that
transforms human waste into clean water and sustainable electricity. The
announcement of the Jacniki Omniprocessor was made with a video in which he
appeared drinking a glass of water that shortly before had been human feces.
A project that could save millions of lives considering that at least 2
billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. The machine was
successfully tested in Dakar: it is capable of managing the waste of a
community of up to 100,000 people, producing 250 kW of electricity and 86,000
liters of water per day.
